Rehab Abroad Guide is operated by Liberty Home, a private clinic in Cape Town – and we recommend it on this page. That's exactly why we explain our criteria openly, and compare countries and types of care rather than naming other clinics. How we compare.
You're looking for help, for yourself or for someone you love. Perhaps the local service has a waiting list, perhaps private rehab in the UK is out of reach, or perhaps you simply need to get away from everything that keeps pulling you back. Treatment abroad can be a good step. But which country? And how do you tell a genuinely good clinic from one with a nice website?
On this page we put the most common options side by side: South Africa (Cape Town), Thailand, Spain and Portugal, private rehab in the UK, and NHS-led treatment. Honestly, with the pros and cons of each.
The short answer
No country is best for everyone. But six questions almost always decide it:
- Can you start quickly, or will you wait weeks or months?
- Is medical detox done in the clinic itself, under 24/7 supervision?
- Who are the clinicians, and are they properly registered?
- What is the all-in cost, in writing, before you travel?
- What happens when you get home – is there real aftercare?
- Is the clinic honest about who it is, what it costs and what it can do?
Score well on those six and you score well on what actually matters. For many UK clients Cape Town comes out strongest – below we explain why, and also when a different choice suits you better.

Option by option: honest pros and cons
South Africa (Cape Town)
Cape Town has become one of the most popular destinations for people from the UK seeking residential treatment. That's not by chance.
Why it works
- Quick start. Many clinics can admit you within days – and the moment someone is ready to accept help is often fragile.
- Distance from triggers, without jet lag. You're genuinely away from your usual environment, but only one or two hours from UK time, so calls with family are easy.
- More treatment for your money. Cape Town clinics often offer more one-to-one therapy and smaller groups than the same budget buys in the UK.
- Calm and space. Climate, nature and exercise are part of recovery, not a luxury extra.
What to watch for
- Quality varies a lot. Not every clinic has its own medical detox, 24/7 nursing or registered clinicians. Ask (see our 10 checks before choosing a rehab abroad).
- On-site detox or partner hospital? With a partner hospital you spend the first, hardest days somewhere else and then move. That isn't necessarily unsafe, but it's an extra transition.
- Aftercare. Ask exactly what happens after you fly home.
Thailand
Pros: wide choice, often short waits, attractive settings and a broad price range.
Cons: the long flight and a 6–7 hour time difference make family contact and UK aftercare harder, and quality and oversight vary greatly between clinics. Check registration, the medical team and the detox protocol especially carefully.
Spain and Portugal
Pros: close to home, little or no time difference, easy for family to visit.
Cons: private clinics are often at the higher end of the price range, and being so close can also make it too easy to leave when things get hard.
Private rehab in the UK
Pros: established clinics, short lines of communication, no travel, and aftercare close to home.
Cons: price – private residential treatment in the UK is usually the most expensive option, and you stay close to your everyday environment.
NHS-led treatment
We'll say it plainly: for cost and support close to home, NHS and local-authority services are hard to beat. Your GP can refer you, or you can usually self-refer to your local drug and alcohol service.
Cons: residential rehab places depend on local funding and assessment, waits vary by area, and programmes are often less intensive and less individual than private residential care.
Why we think Cape Town – and Liberty Home – stands out for many people
On the criteria we weigh most heavily, no other option scores this well on everything at once. Here's what you get at Liberty Home:
| Criterion | Liberty Home |
|---|---|
| Medical detox | In the clinic itself, under 24/7 medical supervision. No move to a partner hospital |
| Waiting time | No waiting list. Admission often within days of the assessment |
| Language | English throughout |
| Reviews | Reviews are on Recovery.com, where you can read them yourself; we don't pick and choose |
| Price | Transparent all-in price, agreed in writing before you travel. Flights are listed separately |
| Payment | UK clients pay privately – there is no NHS or insurer reimbursement to wait for |
| Aftercare | Online groups and relapse prevention after you return home |
| Location | Marina da Gama, Cape Town |
The programme lasts around 6 weeks on average, followed by aftercare. Not sure it's right for you? Ask for free, no-obligation advice.
When Liberty Home is not the right fit
A good clinic also says no. Liberty is probably not right if:
- the person is under 18;
- someone needs a locked ward or detention under the Mental Health Act;
- you need care close to home, for example because of work, family or health.
In that case we'll gladly help you, free of charge, towards the right support in the UK – for example through your GP or your local drug and alcohol service.
In immediate danger? Call 999. For urgent mental-health help, call NHS 111. You can talk to Samaritans any time on 116 123 – free and confidential.
How we compare
Rehab Abroad Guide is operated by Liberty Home. We're not an independent comparison site and we don't pretend to be. We recommend our own clinic, and we chose the criteria above ourselves – because they're the questions families ask us most, and because clinicians agree they make the difference for safety and recovery.
What we do:
- Compare countries and types of care, not other clinics by name.
- Say where other options beat us (such as cost and local support with NHS services).
- Point to official sources, not paid rankings.
- Every enquiry through this site goes to Liberty Home's admissions team – and we tell you so.
What we don't do:
- Award ourselves "best clinic" titles.
- Publish success rates without a source and method.
- Pay for unlabelled "top 5" articles.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best country for rehab abroad from the UK?
It depends on what matters most to you. For a quick start, intensive treatment, distance from triggers and little jet lag, Cape Town is a strong choice. If cost or support close to home matters most, NHS or UK services often suit better.
Is rehab in South Africa safe?
In a good, registered clinic with 24/7 medical supervision and on-site detox, yes. Always check registration, the medical team and the detox protocol. At Liberty Home detox happens in the clinic itself.
Will the NHS or my insurer pay for rehab abroad?
Almost never. UK clients at clinics abroad pay privately. Read how much rehab abroad costs, and whether it's covered.
How quickly can I be admitted?
Liberty Home has no waiting list. After the assessment, admission is often possible within days.
Do I need a visa for South Africa?
UK passport holders can usually visit South Africa visa-free for up to 90 days. Always check the latest entry requirements on GOV.UK before you book.
